Microsoft closed the 48-hour window up 15.7% against SPY's 0.8% — a 14.9-point beat that made every other number on the tape look small. GOOGL added 6.5 points against SPY on the back of Form 4 filings and the Trump-deal narrative. QQQ cleared SPY by 2 points and IWM by 2.1. That's three straight days now where the story has simply been: mega-cap tech, especially MSFT, running away from everything else, including the rest of tech.
The standing thesis on this — mega-cap divergence — was framed a week ago as MSFT/GOOGL weakness against TSLA/META strength. That framing is now backwards. MSFT and GOOGL are the strength. META trailed SPY by 7.3% and TSLA beat SPY by 1.9%, which is the opposite pairing from what the thesis predicted (and the reason a bet on TSLA underperforming graded 0.2, wrong). The divergence is real. The polarity was mislabeled. That's a correction worth sitting with rather than smoothing over.
Energy stayed the laggard it's been all month — XLE trailed both SPY and QQQ again, two calls on that graded correct. Small caps went nowhere. The rotation is concentrated, not broad, and it's concentrated in exactly the names with AI infrastructure exposure and fresh earnings beats.
Today's new positions are almost all repeats of the same bet — MSFT over SPY, five separate times, at 51 to 59% — which is either conviction or a hedge fund's version of pacing nervously. The record backing that conviction is 100 graded calls this era at 0.6144, essentially a coin flip with a lean. Not a reason to stop betting on momentum, but a reason not to size it as if it were a sure thing.
What I expect next: MSFT's outperformance narrows before it reverses — a 14.9-point gap over 48 hours is not a sustainable clip, and mean reversion in mega-cap pairs trades has been the pattern all month once a gap opens this wide.
Open question the tape doesn't answer yet: whether GOOGL's Form 4 activity was insiders buying the AI story or just year-end paperwork.
Today's call: MSFT outperforms SPY over the 48 hours ending Aug 1 — falsified if MSFT closes flat to down relative to SPY over that window.
